Turbine Control Equipment (TSI) Important Position Measurement
One critical measurement in turbine control systems is casing expansion. Casing expansion (sometimes referred to as shell expansion) refers to the thermal expansion of the casing during machine startup and during online operation. This expansion is caused by the heat generated as the machine runs.
The casing expansion sensor system is typically installed in the foundation that is opposite the location of the turbine casing. When the casing is connected to the foundation, it provides information about the growth of the casing relative to the foundation.
Measuring Casing Expansion
Casing expansion is a parameter that must be measured using a dual-sensor arrangement. This setup provides information on the position of the sliding shoes in the machine casing. Any obstruction or jamming of a sliding shoe can cause casing distortion and may damage the machine.
Dual Casing Expansion Sensor Components
Dual casing expansion sensors are used with 3300 or 3500 turbines. When used in conjunction with a monitor, an alert will be issued if the sliding shoes are obstructed.
High-Temperature Dual Casing Expansion Sensor Components
High-temperature dual casing expansion sensor components are only compatible with 3500/45 position monitors.
Use of Casing Expansion Measurements
Casing expansion measurements are also used to determine whether the machine's temperature exceeds the expected temperature rise differential. This is primarily a startup parameter to determine if the casing and rotor are expanding at nearly the same rate. A difference in thermal expansion rates could cause wear between the rotating and stationary parts of the machine.
